Knowing how to build temporary site access means planning for the surface beneath the work, not just the work itself. The right temporary access route protects turf, gravel, and finished areas while giving people and equipment a stable path where they need it.
For contractors, facilities teams, event operators, and landscape crews, the goal is rarely to build a permanent road. It is to create a dependable route quickly, use it for the duration of the project, then remove it without leaving ruts, torn turf, or a costly repair bill. Plastic ground protection mats and connectors make that possible when the route is measured, laid out, and matched to actual site conditions.
Start With the Traffic, Not the Mat
Temporary access is not one-size-fits-all. A pedestrian walkway, a utility cart route, a landscaping equipment lane, and a work pad for heavier machinery place very different demands on the ground. Before choosing mat size or ordering connectors, identify what will travel across the route, how often it will pass, and where the highest stress points will be.
Look closely at turns, entry points, slopes, gates, loading areas, and places where equipment will stop or pivot. Straight travel generally spreads force more predictably. Turning, braking, and repeated staging concentrate pressure and can shift mats if the system is undersized or poorly connected. 1. Measure the full route and work areas

A route that is only wide enough for the tire track may seem efficient, but it leaves no margin for steering corrections, foot traffic, or edge damage.
Choose the layout based on the widest equipment using the route. A narrow path may be appropriate for foot traffic or wheeled carts. Larger vehicles often need multiple mats installed side by side to create a usable lane. Standardized ground mat sizes, such as 3-by-8-foot, 4-by-8-foot, and 40-inch-by-10-foot panels, make it easier to calculate coverage and configure routes around real site dimensions.
2. Inspect and prepare the surface

The trade-off is straightforward: installing more connectors takes additional setup time, but it can reduce realignment work and improve route consistency during use.
Follow the connector configuration suited to the mat design and traffic conditions. Check that each connection is seated properly before allowing equipment onto the route. A connector system works best when the mats are already aligned, rather than being used to force badly positioned panels together.
5. Add traction where the job calls for it
Temporary access must work in real conditions, including rain, mud, snow, and high foot traffic. Choose mat surfaces with traction appropriate for the application. A traction-focused surface can help crews and vehicle operators maintain footing and control while protecting the ground below.
For event venues, schools, and pedestrian areas, pay close attention to trip hazards and transitions at entrances. For contractor and equipment use, prioritize a stable path that remains visible and usable as weather changes. If a section begins to move, address it before the issue spreads across the route. Reposition the panels, improve the connection pattern, or widen the area if traffic is forcing equipment off the protected surface. Small corrections are faster and less expensive than repairing deep ruts or replacing damaged landscaping after the job.
Also communicate the route plan to operators and site personnel. Mark the entry and exit points, define any equipment restrictions, and make sure everyone understands that protected access is there to be used, not bypassed.
